1
On the footplate of Britannia 70012, John Of Gaunt, with Carnforth driver Harry Bush, we pull out of Carnforth down sidings at 8 p.m., echo through the station and head north into the black night with the fireman shovelling hard for the climb into the fells.

We echo through Oxenholme station and wait for a banking engine to join on behind. The driver explains the ritual. We get two crows from the banker and set off on the assault of Grayrigg bank..

Over Grayrigg summit, we gather speed as we descend into Lonsdale, from Low Gill to Low Borrow Bridge.
4
Climbing the 1-in-75 gradient up Shap Fells with banker assistance from Tebay, recorded to Scout Green.
5
From a signal stop just before Penrith, we rouse the souls of the dead as we whistle up the town and echo through the station at 10.40 p.m.
6
Threading our way through Carlisle’s network of freight lines from Upperby to the Eden bridge. The fireman points out the junction with the Long Drag from Leeds.
