May 24th, 1967, and from Selside signal cabin we hear lvatt Mogul 43119 toiling up Ribblesdale, running short of steam with 12 full ballast wagons on the 1 in 100 gradient and stopping outside the cabin to raise more steam. The signalman telephones control at Carlisle then, with a new head of steam, the train continues on its way. Long Meg, the heaviest train on The Drag, a lime train from Long Meg quarry in Cumberland to Widnes, hauled by 9F 92208, plods slowly up the 1in100 gradient in Mallerstang on October 12th, 1967, echoing against a scar as it approaches and we hear it far into the distance towards the summit.
