1
A pre-war Southern Electric train westbound out of London Bridge station on June 19th, 1968.
2
An introduction to London Transport railways and a ride in a sub-surface train from Rotherhithe to Wapping and Shadwell on the Metropolitan (East London) Line on June 19th, 1968, recorded on board an ex-Metropolitan Railway K-stock clerestory-roofed traction car of 1927 in an L.T. Q-stock four-car set.
3
Classic sounds of vintage electric traction motors and thumping air-brake pump as we ride a 1931 L.N.E.R./L.M.S. three-car train along the Manchester South Junction & Altrincham Railway on April 9th, 1969, from Manchester Oxford Road to Knott Mill & Deansgate, Old Trafford, Warwick Road, Stretford, Dane Road, Sale, Brooklands, Timperley, Navigation Road and Altrincham & Bowdon.
4
L.M.S. trains of 1938 and identical B.R. stock of 1956 calling at Birkenhead Hamilton Square underground station on their way to Liverpool Central, Rock Ferry, New Brighton and West Kirby. Eight six-car trains arrive and depart at the two platforms in 14 minutes during an evening peak period in June, 1969.
5
Starting inside the great train shed of Liverpool Exchange terminus, we ride a 1939 L.M.S. three-car train to Sandhills, Bank Hall and Bootle Oriel Road on its way to Southport on April 21st, 1977. Exchange station closed on April 30th, 1977, and the electric trains went underground.
6
On a still spring morning we hear birdsong and the pickup shoes twanging the live rail as a six-car L.M.S. train from Southport lifts out of Birkdale station and whistles for the next crossing as it heads south to Liverpool Exchange on April 28th, 1977.
7
In Birkdale signal cabin we hear the signalman hand-cranking the big iron wheel to open and close the Weld Road crossing gates and moving the levers to set the signals for an up train stopping at Birkdale station and a down empty-stock train passing non-stop on the wet night of May 1st, 1977. When the gates close across the tracks, motor traffic resumes.
8
Inside Meols Cop electric car repair shop at Southport, we hear the electric air compressor from a Liverpool - Ormskirk train of 1922, used to power machines in the workshop, and the electric overhead crane, recorded in September, 1969. Meols Cop works closed on February 14th, 1970, and the electric trains went to Birkenhead North works for repair.
9
A ride in an ex-Glasgow District Subway cable-hauled two-car train of 1896, electrified in 1935, through Glasgow's 4ft. gauge, twin-bore subway, from Kelvin Bridge to Saint George's Cross and Cowcaddens, on August 20th, 1975. The old subway closed in May, 1977, for modernisation and reopened in 1980.
