1
Shunting loose-coupled wagons by steam power - Black Five 45394 - in a level freightyard at Ulverston on February 8th, 1968.
2
Close-up of wagons and shunter in Kendal freightyard later the same month. This was an inclined yard with shunting by gravity.
3
After shunting Kendal yard on March 1st, 1968, 8F 48666 runs through the curves and points to couple up to the train it has made up in the goods shed.
4
With flanges binding and squealing, 48666 pulls the train out of the yard.
5
48666 runs round its train on the running lines and takes it away to Carnforth.
6
Freight under way: Black Five 44963 lifts a freight out of Kendal up the 1-in-80 gradient to Oxenholme and we hear it into the distance on a still May afternoon with birdsong.
7
Another May afternoon freight from Kendal headed by Black Five 44874 echoes through Oxenholme station and the home signal bounces as it drops with a clatter.
8
Sounds in the signal cabin as a steam freight from Kendal clears Oxenholme station.
9
On the footplate of Black Five 44817, at the head of a night freight from Stoke On Trent, clanking and echoing through Carlisle at midnight on May 10th, 1967.
10
Kendal freightyard, 8 a.m., July 24th, 1968: Black Five 44735, its driving wheels slipping on the dewy rails and the incline of the yard, gives a sensational display of running on the spot and takes four minutes to get moving with wagons from the coal sidings.
11
After shunting the yard, 44735 picks up the brakevan. We ride the brakevan, coupled to the front of the locomotive, through the length of the yard and stop beyond the points.
12
Locomotive and brakevan roll back down the yard and couple up to the marshalled train.
13
On July 25th, 1968, 8F 48409 reverses through a crossover on to a parcels train in a siding.
14
We ride the footplate of 48409 as, with driving wheels slipping, it takes the parcels train out of the siding and reverses it into Kendal station for loading.
15
On July 26th, 1968, Black Five 45324 runs around its train on the running lines at Kendal.
16
Black Five 44709 and a freight brakevan form the last steam train out of Kendal at 11.50 a.m. after shunting the yard on August 3rd, 1968, the last day of regular steam on B.R
17
At the end of the day's duty, 8F 48666 clanks along the road to Carnforth locoshed on April 26th, 1968
