On the footplate of Britannia 70012, John Of Gaunt, with Carnforth driver Harry Bush, we pull out of Carnforth down sidings at 8 p.m., echo through the station and head north into the black night with the fireman shovelling hard for the climb into the fells. |

We echo through Oxenholme station and wait for a banking engine to join on behind. The driver explains the ritual. We get two crows from the banker and set off on the assault of Grayrigg bank.. |

Over Grayrigg summit, we gather speed as we descend into Lonsdale, from Low Gill to Low Borrow Bridge. |

Climbing the 1-in-75 gradient up Shap Fells with banker assistance from Tebay, recorded to Scout Green. |

From a signal stop just before Penrith, we rouse the souls of the dead as we whistle up the town and echo through the station at 10.40 p.m. |

Threading our way through Carlisle’s network of freight lines from Upperby to the Eden bridge. The fireman points out the junction with the Long Drag from Leeds. |
